The local interwebs are abuzz with news on UnlockMyModem spreading fast in the local East African tech scene. The main reason for this is what UnlockMyModem promises: to unlock your Huawei modem for free. All you have to do is give them the IMEI number and follow them on Twitter and fan them on Facebook.
Their approach has response on Twitter has been pretty viral with plenty of discussions and tweets to find out how true it is and it was soon very apparent that the hack is true:

* Safaricom is the licensed provider of the modem, Yu is another mobile phone service provider.
It’s their Facebook advertising that had caused the most buzz with their fan page garnering over 800 fans and plenty of people satisfied and convinced in their service. Their tagline being “the code shall set you free” and they take the IMEI number of the modem or data card and return the requested code to the user.
The guys over at WannaBeGeek.Co.Ke did a pretty detailed post with plenty of hacks for older models of the Huawei modems such as the Huawei e220 that came out with Safaricom and Zain, and now Orange too. For the first generation, you don’t need UnlockMyModem as much, however for the latest generation of modems, which are a lot harder to crack and unlock, they are offering a solution, hence the reason they’re leveraging the service in return for your social media ‘appreciation’. They do, however, have a very clear disclaimer on their site and warn that after 10 tries the modem locks itself.
The only issue with it all may be since they have the Twitter API auto-tweeting every post made on the forum, most times including people’s names, personal email addresses and Facebook profiles without any privacy policy or warning. The idea is a great one no less, just a little more work to be done to fine tune the execution.
Speculation online has it that Safaricom is set to take some action against this. Huawei have a local office in Kenya, but no official comment has since been received from them or any other mobile phone service providers so far.

Ok, You should also paste here the safaricom warning email that they sent about sueing these unlockers.
I just visited the site and am not sure how long it will last, this thing is very illegal!
The thing is true. i just unlocked my modem with their service!!
@Andrew the email was to Kenyan unlockers but unlock my modem is international i hear the guys are from austria. Anyway safcom are not the first to have modems. Companies like Orange, Virgin, T-moblie, Vodafone they really don’t care how much people unlock thier modems coz once i buy the modem its mine and i can do anything i want with it.
Andrew…..here is the diffrence
Unlocking is perfectly legal
Unblocking is illegal
Unlocking/Network unlocking allows it to use any simcard
Unblocking deals with changing the IMEI of a device that had been previously blocked in order to allow it to work again…..this is very illegal
By the way there are very many sites that offer these services…..
These mobile providers are thieves who cash in their part of the price in the first two or so months. After that it should be upon the modem owner to use any network he/she pleases.
The information is out there and there’s nothing they can do about it even legally.
I have unlocked various types of modems without any help or the website. Just google and the solution is out there.
Cool: the code shall set u free.

Hi,
I think modem unlocking should be free since buying the modem from safaricom one is not required nor asked to sign any contract papers. I think one should be given the choice to do what he/she wants with the modem or they lower there internet rates.
To unlock your modem for free, go to my blog blog.idealvault.com register and leave your modem details as a comment, and the code will be sent to your email.

I THINK UNLOCKING OF MODEMS WILL ENCOURAGE PROVIDERS TO REDUCE THE INTERNET RATE BECAUSE COMPETITION IS WIDE
