There is no doubt social media is changing lives and the way we interact. It has proven that it overlooks social, economic and political barriers to connect people. Africa, as a continent, has not been left behind and if the number of bloggers, interactions on twitter and the ever popular Facebook is anything to go by, then Africa is the continent to watch. Though the number of people logging onto social media sites is rising, the number of people who need lessons on its usage is also growing. In a country like Kenya, internet penetration stands at 3% in a population of 40 million people. This is a partly figure.
RLabs of South Africa recently held a very unique event of introducing people to social media; social media surgery. The event that was well attended indicated that people are gearing up to the social media revolution in the continent. According to RLabs, a majority of people showed interest in signing and opening email, Facebook and Twitter accounts. The favourite of the bunch was Facebook that had people milling around to learn more about the world’s number one social networking site. Blogging was also mentioned with others interested in learning about sharing sites such as Flickr and Youtube. And RLabs did not forget to include in their surgery sessions the use of mobile phone to stay connected at all times. RLabs has opened the door for social media fans, enthusiasts and users to a unique way of taking social media to the population.
