Tech4Africa: A Matter of Anger and Pride

2

Earlier this year we covered Tech4Africa, a conference planned for later this year in South Africa:

Tech4Africa is a “Web and Emerging Technology conference bringing, global perspective to the African context

According to the official event website. The focus areas for this conference are:

  1. Emerging tech & trends for Africa
  2. Applications for Web 2.0 in Africa
  3. Mobile & wireless innovation and trends for the next 3 years
  4. Cloud computing and it’s relevance for businesses in Africa
  5. African success stories
  6. The funding landscape

Memeburn today has an interesting piece on the same, highlighting the fact that this conference is driven by two interesting motivators:

So after 4 years of trying to get it off the ground, where the reasons have changed depending on where I was as a person, I think it boils down to anger and pride.

Anger at how far Africa is behind the US and Europe (with regards to technology of course, I’m not commenting on anything else) in a 200+ million people market full of frontier opportunity, and why the tipping point seems so far away.

Pride because I can see the potential in the people I speak to, the products I’ve looked at, the interns I’ve hired, and the honest intent I’ve witnessed.
