The 48-hour tech startup pitching contest, IPO48, is back in nairobi, and bigger! Last year the contest was held at the Strathmore University where a bunch of young and innovative minds congregated over a 48-hour period to come up with ideas and making businesses out of them. This time the event is to be held at Nairobi’s innovation hub from Friday evening, August 12th, through to Sunday, August 14th.
“The IPO48 experience was quite helpful in the way that I learned first hand what I need in order to develop an IT startup and the kind of expertise I need. So now, as I continue developing my idea, I know the way to go about it. Oh… And the food was really good!” – Zephania Ajode
“The IPO48 is a wholesome experience. The fact that it encourages teamwork and blending in of different capacities of the team members made it worthwhile.” – Linda Kwamboka
“First thing I must say, is that, I had a great experience! Pitching for the very first time at this event, was totally amazing for me. I have established some great contacts, by just the mere fact of being at IPO48 and having a start up idea as well. All in all, it was a one of a kind event not just in Kenya but in Africa.” – John Adams
It is out of last years contest that M-Farm was born. The startup is a mobile based service to farmers in Kenya that allows farmers to keep abreast of market prices and market conditions for their produce.
The M-Farmers went on to be acclaimed globally . IPO48 invested $12,500 last year and this year they are looking to invest up to 25,000 euro.
The event is not just big on the investment cash but is providing more opportunities for mentorship for the startup founders. When a (potential) startup registers, they become part of the humanIPO startup network which then exposes them to online mentorship. IPO48 has also partnered with quartz+co to organize a workshop on the business side of things for entrepreneurs. The workshop will focus on building a business case, creating your business model, sales presentation and negotiation.
