It’s been barely a two months since Ushahidi co-founder Erik Hersman (aka whiteafrican) relocated back to Nairobi, Kenya from the US and the effects are already evident. Today, Erik announced publicly the opening of a new tech hub in Nairobi. According to Erik It’s an open space for the technologists, investors, tech companies and hackers in the area. Interview on the Kenyan Blogging Scene
I got this interview from last year where Moses Kemibaro and Rebecca Wanjiku, two of Kenya’s more prolific bloggers sat down for an interview on one of the national broadcasters, KTN. I find it interesting that KTN has been taking some note to what is happening with “social” in Kenya. In a separate interview, they had Mark Kaigwa and Kahenya talking about social media. I’ll be hunting down that video as well KTN Bloggers Roundtable meeting with Larry Madowo, Moses Kemibaro...Read Full Post

What do you learn from launching 3 companies?
As I have probably mentioned before, I believe that the startup scene in Africa is just taking shape. For example, in my country, Kenya, I believe that 10 – 20 years from now, we will be talking about some of the current influencers in the industry as the Bill Gates’ and Steve Jobs’ of our continent and our generation. Since these are the formative stages, we can look out of our context and learn from other established tech clusters around the world. As usual, none stands out as...Read Full Post
The H-Factor: Innovating by Following your Hunch
Someone once said that good things happen over time, but truly great things happen all at once (I think it was from some movie). Anyway, the point is that sometimes, in the mind of an innovator or creator of any kind – an artist, sculptor, poet, software engineer or whatever other creative work you can think of – a spark goes off, something inexplicable, a magic moment of sorts, a period of such amazing insight. In fact more often than not it is not totally clear to the creator what it...Read Full Post
Academia (in Africa) and Social Media
They say the only constant thing is change. One of the greatest challenges facing academia today is probably that with the rapid changes in technology it is becoming harder and harder to keep up with everything. Learning tools have changed, students are more empowered than before, they have more sources of information other than just books. Plato's Academy I came across this awesome slideshare on Universities and Social Networking View more documents from Chris Sparshott. This makes me worry...Read Full Post
Interview with WildlifeDirect
We highlighted how WildlifeDirect is using blogging and other social tools to further their wildlife conservation goals. We managed to get Victor Ngeny (@ngeny) the Blogger Training Officer at WildlifeDirect to answer some questions about their experience: Afrinnovator.com: Some background on WD. When/how it started, who was involved at the inception… WildlifeDirect was founded in 2004, by Dr. Richard Leakey as a non-profit conservation organization based in Kenya along the lines of an internet...Read Full Post
